\n<\/strong><\/em>… And so we are setting out on a\u00a0 project to restore these notable bells to their former glory…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nThe headline costs are as follows:
\n(All costs are approximate)<\/small><\/h2>\nUrgent Works<\/h2>\n
\n<\/strong>The clappers needed to be refurbished. The striking surfaces of the clappers were flattened and the \u201chinges\u201d were loose. The action of the clapper grinds away the inside of the bell.
\n(We have done this urgent work and the church has arranged to pay for it)<\/em>
\n(2) New Ropes<\/a> (\u00a3240 per bell)
\n<\/strong>Not only were our ropes becoming worn, but we also had no spares in case of a break.
\nThe ropes needed to be replaced.
\n<\/strong>(This was urgent too, so we have bought these.\u00a0 Thanks to the church – they used their funds for this as well.)<\/em><\/p>\nMajor Works<\/h2>\n
\n<\/strong>80% of the safe thickness of the bells has been worn away.\u00a0 We need to turn the whole bell through 900\u00a0<\/sup> to provide a new strike point.
\n(This involves completely dismantling each bell installation, lifting it out of the frame, turning it and then refitting to the headstock with new bolts and fittings.)
\n<\/em>(4) Bearing overhaul<\/a> (\u00a3240 per bearing <\/strong>or \u00a3480 per bell<\/em>)
\n<\/strong>The sealed bearings have been in place since 1987 and the grease is wearing out. They need to be cleaned out and repacked with new grease.
\n(5) Painting the Frame (\u00a31,850 per bell)<\/strong>
\nAll the ironwork to the bellframe and ringing fittings needs to be thoroughly cleaned down and descaled before being primed and then painted with two coats of enamel.\u00a0 This needs to be done while the bells are lifted out of their frame.<\/p>\nOther works<\/h2>\n
\n<\/strong>The large wheel is a vital control mechanism. One wheel (on the 5th bell) has begun to break up and it needs to be rebuilt with a new steamed ash rim and elm “shrouds”
\n (7) New Pulley\u00a0 (\u00a3270 one-off )
\n<\/strong>The bell ropes run over a series of pulleys. One is worn and has become oval. It needs to be replaced.
\n(This is less urgent and could be left to a later date)<\/em><\/p>\n
