The Forgotten Anniversary
The “Forgotten Army” of the war against Japan received far less acclaim when this conflict was finally ended on 15th August 1945. 80 years on and the celebrations were still muted.
However, in 793 places across the world, this event was marked with bells. Kildwick joined with this celebration, ringing some excellently struck Plain Bob Doubles and some call changes, looked after by our younger ringers, George and Erin.
Worldwide, the ringing took many forms and took place in many different places. From mightly cathedral bells to handbells in a sitting room – and even virtual bells, rung from two sides of the Atlantic, they rang out. They rang relatively simple call changes. A single bell tolled for the 80 years passed. Many quarter peals were rung – and several full peals too.
The forgotten army, indeed. But not totally forgotten. We salute you.
