Bell Ropes

Yorkshire Tail Ends

Kildwick’s bell ropes are a bit special! Kildwick is one of the six towers (worldwide!) that has retained these historic ropes which have not one, but two fluffy woollen sections.

Victorian ringers thought they were a great idea but they do make bell handling more difficult and don’t really suit modern styles of ringing. Although they have dropped out of favour, we at St Andrew’s feel that it is important to preserve this rare piece of our heritage. And, anyway, we like them!

Not only were our old ropes becoming worn but we had no spare set that could be called into service when necessary.

The old ropes are now carefully stored in the clock chamber where the mice that ate the last lot won’t get at them!
Our new ropes are smart in their St Andrew’s colours of blue and white and should last for many years to come.
