100 years of ringing out over Kildwick has taken its toll.
The regular impact of wrought iron on bronze has flattened the clappers and worn holes in the bells.
We need to turn the bells so that they offer a new surface for the clappers to strike.
In an hour’s ringing on our eight bells, there will be around 14,200 individual “bongs”. That’s about 1,776 bongs per bell – and 888 bangs of the clapper on each side of the bell.
No wonder the poor bells get dented!

From the bell hanger’s report:
None of the bells has ever been turned to present new faces to the blows of their clappers.
The bells are now indented at their current strike points in varying degrees, the worst worn being the tenor and fourth, wear to those two bells being approximately 8% of total thickness.
10% wear is generally accepted as the wise maximum at which point remedial action is required and it follows that such action will soon be needed.
