VE Day – 80th Anniversary

We’re celebrating VE Day-80 in style!

We are planning a host of activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

On the actual day (Thursday 8th May) all the bells in the British Isles have been requested to ring out at 6:30pm to celebrate.  There may not be many places that can’t hear the sound of bells!  The ringers of St Andrews will be taking part in this – and you are welcome to come along and listen.

Provided the weather is suitable, we will throw open the doors so you can watch the remarkable skill of the ringers (if it is windy, we need to keep the doors shut).
There are around three tons of bell metal at the top of the tower.  The ringers will swing these through a full circle, timing the swings to a fraction of a second – all at the end of 60ft of rope!

On the Bank Holiday (Monday 5th May) we will be hosting a day of rejoicing
– as well as launching our appeal for the refurbishment of the bells.

Highlights of the day will include:

  • Stalls in the church
Browse a wide variety of craft stalls.  Regardless of the weather!
  • Demonstrations of ringing
The day will begin at 11:00 with a demonstration of English bell ringing.
After 4:00pm, we will ring again to mark the end of the daytime events.
  • Tower Tours
Visit the normally-hidden heights of the tower.  Watch the Cryer clock tick and see the rather awesome great church bells in their frame at the top of the tower

  • Picnics
The weather being clement (of course it will be!), come and picnic on the church green while being entertained by Lancashire Belle and the Bayside Lindy Dancers
  • Dancing
Can you learn the Lindy Hop?
  • Eat out, 1940’s style
In the evening, there’s a special 1940’s style meal in the Parish Rooms.

Refurbishing the bells

After 111 years of sounding their notes out over Kildwick village,
the bells need some Tender Loving Care.
